Retired teacher publishes children’s book on bullying and prayer

A retired Grunthal teacher publishes her first children’s book on her own testimony about bullying.

Susanne Funk is originally from Grunthal, Manitoba, but she hasn’t always lived here. Funk grew up in Germany and moved to Canada at the age of 15.

“At first, I didn’t like it that much. I thought I had to leave my friends and our beautiful farm. But then I came back at 18, to cure my homesickness and of course my friends changed. I realized I was coming home because that’s where my family is, ”Funk explains.

After high school, Funk graduated as a teacher. She taught Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2 at Grunthal Elementary School for 34 years.

“The book is about loving yourself, even if you are different. When I arrived in Canada, I was already almost 6 feet tall. I also had an accent and not a good command of English. Most of the children in the class, a lot of them, have blockages. So I want them to know if they have a problematic situation, that they can reach out to God. “

Funk’s book, Gifts from heaven, is aimed at children from 5 to 10 years old. She uses animals as the main characters.

“Children can safely enter their own emotions when they see a giraffe being emotional. I use animals because as a teacher I have been to the zoo many times, I have read thousands of children’s books. Every time I read a book with animals the kids were so intrigued and I love it. “

The main character, Ms. Zoe, is a giraffe. Funk chose this to reflect herself as she is as tall as a baby giraffe, which her grandson likes to remind her of.

“It is my heart that children know that God is only a breath and a prayer away. I would like people to believe that God has imagination. In this case, the answer is not that ‘he takes the situation off but he’s the one who says,’ I’m here with you. ‘”

Funk made a soft launch for Gifts from heaven on June 23, 2021, but she hopes to do one in person in the fall at Grunthal Lumber.
