Which book should you read next?

Did you know that librarians have superpowers?

No, unfortunately I cannot fly or have woodland creatures clean my house for me. I can, however, help you find the perfect book. I don’t know if you know it, but a lot of librarians are book fans. I know, shocking right?

This summer, I returned home to visit my family. I spent several hours of my vacation compiling a list of books for my mom based on her current reading “mood”. This is what I do for fun. Just this week my grandmother called me to see if I could find an out of print WWII memoir written by a Jewish doctor that her father might have known during the war. This one was a bit more difficult as she had to translate the title for me.

I admit, total nerd book here. It’s like I have to work with books every day or something like that.

For me, one of the best parts of being a librarian is recommending books. It is like a treasure hunt to associate a reader with his book. Here at the Greenwood Public Library, we’ve created your next favorite bookboxes. Teen librarian Jessica and I use all of our super powers and librarian resources to browse book lists, reviews, social media, and our collection to find a book that’s right for you.

There are many book subscription boxes out there such as LootCrate and OwlCrate, so we decided to make our own library version. After you have reserved a place, I will send you a quiz so that I can know your reading style. It’s not too complicated, just a few questions about the types of books you like to read and the latest books, movies, and TV shows you liked. (You’d be surprised how much I can recommend based on your love of The Walking Dead movies or Alfred Hitchcock.) If you tell me you love Stephen King, I could give you a book by Joe Hill or Alma Katsu. If you are a huge Outlander fan, I recommend A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers or A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain.

Your box probably won’t contain the new James Patterson, Stephen King, or Nora Roberts. I do my best to stay away from bestsellers and try to find something you haven’t read yet. You will also get fun and funny items, bookmarks and buttons. (If you hate puns, I apologize in advance). I’m also including a list of three other titles you might like. If you fill out a review card for us, your review could be posted on the library’s social media and you will be entered into a raffle for a bookstore gift card. You can return the book at any time (hopefully after you’ve read and enjoyed it), and don’t forget that you keep the loot.

You can sign up for Your Next Favorite Book Box at greenwoodlibrary.us. If you like the program, you can sign up for another box. However, space is limited, please do not register for two boxes in a row. I can’t wait to help you find your next favorite book.
